THE CROSS: SIGN OF LOVE AND LIFE
The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross invites us to look upon the Cross not as a sign of defeat, but as the glorious sign of God’s saving love. In the Gospel, Jesus tells Nicodemus that the Son of Man must be lifted up so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. On the Cross, we discover the depth of the Father’s love: God gives his Son not to condemn the world, but to save it. What once represented suffering and shame has become, through Christ, the tree of life and the source of our hope.
In the desert, those who looked upon the bronze serpent were healed and given life. Saint Paul reminds us that Jesus humbled himself and became obedient even unto death on a Cross, and therefore God highly exalted him. The Cross teaches us that the path to glory passes through humble love, obedience, sacrifice, and self-giving. As disciples of Jesus, may we learn to carry our daily crosses with faith and allow our struggles to unite us more deeply with Christ, who transforms suffering into grace and death into life.
