FORGIVE FROM THE HEART
Forgiveness is at the heart of Christian life. In today’s Gospel, Peter asks Jesus how often he must forgive, and Jesus leads him beyond counting and measuring. Through the parable of the unforgiving servant, Jesus reminds us that we have first received an immeasurable mercy from God. Having been forgiven so generously, we are called to extend that same mercy to those who hurt us.
The Book of Sirach warns us not to nourish anger, resentment, or a desire for revenge, while St. Paul reminds us that whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Forgiveness does not deny the pain we have suffered; rather, it refuses to allow that pain to control our hearts. As disciples of Christ, we are invited to release bitterness, seek reconciliation where possible, and become living signs of the mercy we ourselves receive from God.
