1st Sunday of Lent

THE RIGHT OPTIONS

God is exalted through the narration of the creation story of human beings, the most advanced of all creatures. Yet, the responsibility for the disorder in the world is attributed to human being. The temptations that Jesus faced and his victory over them are in sharp contrast to the failure of the first parents when faced with the alluring temptation the devil so cleverly devised for them. Their failure was the originating sin and the beginning of evil in the world (i.e., the original sin and all its consequences). The conquest of Jesus over temptation is the remedy for that failure. Jesus decidedly turned away the tempter because his messianic role was not to capture earthly power and dominion but to conquer hearts and consciences lovingly, to lead them to a loving submission and obedience to the one true God. Where sin is multiplied, abundance of grace is offered through Jesus to enable human beings to seek pardon and to stand against evil. As the sin of the first parents led to condemnation for all, the obedience of one man, Jesus Christ, makes all righteous.

Ash Wednesday

REPENT AND BELIEVE

With Ash Wednesday the Church enters the season of Lent – the springtime of Christian life. This season begins with ash but ends with fire. Generally, fire comes first and then comes the ash. Here ash comes first, and fire comes later. We are invited to realize the fact that God can turn our sinful past into ashes and ignite us with the fire of his love. As the ashes are imposed on our foreheads today one of the two formulas may be used: ‘Repent and believe in the good news’ or ‘you are dust and unto dust you shall return.’ These formulas reveal our frailty, our transitory nature, our weak nature. Because of our weak human nature, we commit sin and thus stand in need of repentance. No matter how much progress we make in our life we should never forget that we are dust and unto dust we shall return. The beauty is that in this earthen vessel God has placed a precious treasure, namely, his Holy Spirit. Let us enter into this season with the right disposition of repentance so that we may enjoy the richness of this treasure.

FROM HATRED TO LOVE…

Today, we are called upon by the Church to reflect about our love and concern for our neighbour, very specially of those whom we hate. The greatest challenge that we face is to forgive. It is not possible merely by human effort. We need God’s strength to accept others as they are with all our limitations. The hallmark of Christian life is forgiveness and love of neighbour as well as enemies. It is easy to say that I love God but the expression of it in daily life is a hard task. God’s chosen people were, and are, expected to be holy people sharing in God’s Holiness by embodying His love, mercy and forgiveness. Let us pray for the grace that we may have generous heart to love everyone.

THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM

The purpose of the incarnation of Christ is to establish God’s loving kingdom here on earth. Though the human beings went away from the love of God, the reconciling work is carried out by Christ. Jesus established new laws for the kingdom of God on the humanitarian grounds. Thus, following the loving command of God may we become the builders of God’s loving kingdom here on earth.

BE A SALT & LIGHT

Ad Gentes invites everyone to be the missionaries. We are given a mission to live out Christ in the world. Today’s liturgy teaches us the ways and means to be the missionaries. The missionary call invites us to be the salt and light of the world. In order to be the light or salt to others, we must first possess the salt and the spark of light in us.
